Grubmaster Duties
On an outing, each scout patrol is responsible for their own meals - adults do not provide or prepare meals for them. During outing planning, the patrol will plan meals together and assign one member of the patrol to be the "Grub Master." Being a Grub Master will satisfy some Rank Advancement and Merit Badge requirements, and build skills such as planning, budgeting, shopping smartly, and of course, cooking.
Grub Master Duties:
During outing planning, the Grub master...
Gets a list of people in your patrol that are attending the outing from scout leaders
Checks if there are any food allergies in your patrol
Gets meal budget requirements from scout leaders
Works with the patrol to plan all meals and snacks on the outing
Works with the patrol to create a grocery shopping list
Works with the patrol to make a list of any special supplies needed (like Dutch Ovens)
After planning, before the outing, the Grub Master:
Buys all the groceries needed for the meals (don't forget to stay within budget)
Brings patrol groceries and supplies to the outing
On the outing, the Grub Master...
Oversees patrol cooking and cleaning at outing mealtimes
After the outing, the Grub Master...
Submits receipts for reimbursement
IMPORTANT: The Grub Master DOES NOT:
Plan all meals by themselves
Cook all meals by themselves
Grub Master Helpful Tips:
Review the Cooking section in the Scout Handbook (Chapter 10)
Consider pre-cooking.
Have copy of the recipe packed
Pre-measure ingredients placing them in labeled Ziploc bags.
Know about any allergies or eating restrictions for Scouts being fed.
If doing Dutch oven meal, allow time to heat the coals which is about 30-45 minutes to be ready to cook on the coals. Know the number of coals needed on top and bottom of the Dutch oven for the particular recipe.
Think about if you need to pack a dutch oven or other specialty supplies (you may be able to borrow them from the troop)
All patrol box supplies should be returned in clean, ready to use condition.
